Santee Chamber of Commerce Votes in Opposition to Proposition 50 to Safeguard Santee’s Business Community and Protect Fair Representation
SANTEE, CA – The Board of Directors of the Santee Chamber of Commerce has voted to officially oppose Proposition 50. The Board’s decision is grounded in our commitment to protecting the economic interests of Santee’s business community and advocating for policies that support local job creation and a stable business climate.
The Santee Chamber of Commerce opposes Proposition 50 because it undermines the independent citizens’ redistricting process that was created to ensure fairness and accountability in our elections. By shifting redistricting power back to legislators, Prop 50 opens the door to political gerrymandering, enabling elected officials to manipulate district lines for their own advantage. For Santee, the consequences are immediate and significant: our city currently sits in California’s 48th Congressional District, which unites East County communities with shared priorities. Under the proposed Prop 50 map, Santee could be grouped with very different regions such as rural mountain areas or more urban communities, diluting our local voice and shifting the focus away from priorities that matter most to Santee businesses, such as infrastructure, transportation, and small-business support. This change threatens to weaken our representation in Washington at a time when federal funding and advocacy are critical to sustaining local growth. By voting “No” on Prop 50, we protect fair elections, maintain strong community representation, and ensure that Santee businesses and residents continue to have a meaningful voice in shaping our future.
The Santee Chamber of Commerce is the voice of business in the Santee region, advocating on behalf of local companies of all sizes and sectors. With deep ties in the community, the Santee Chamber of Commerce works alongside business leaders, civic institutions and public officials to design and promote solutions that build an inclusive and competitive regional economy.
